The Sansum Diabetes Research Institute is a research center dedicated to increasing knowledge to prevent, treat and cure diseases, especially diabetes. The organization's founder, Dr. William D. Sansum, brought renown to Santa Barbara in 1922 as the first person in the U.S. to produce and administer insulin. During the mid-1920's, Santa Barbara was one of only a few places in the world where individuals with diabetes could receive insulin and avoid early death from the disease.
