Hospira Invests Nearly $200 Million to Expand Biologics Contract Manufacturing Plant

Industrialinfo.com reported July 26 that Hospira (Lake Forest, Ill.) has completed Phase I of a $200 million expansion to its McPherson production site. Featuring elaborate process equipment, the 20-year-old plant provides outsource development and manufacturing of biologic parenterals.
Hospira began the massive project in 2003. The $100 million first phase included the construction of a building to add 150,000 square feet of space to the site. According to IndustrialInfo.com, the next phase will cover the installation of nearly $60 million worth of process equipment, including aseptic filling, lyophilization (freeze-drying) and finishing equipment. Already on order, the equipment is expected to be installed and validated no later than the first quarter of 2006.
IndustrialInfo.com reported that Hospira is considering investing an additional $40 million in the McPherson site in the next few years, and is also spending $15 million to expand its Clayton, S.C., production plant.
