American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC)
AACC (American Association for Clinical Chemistry) is an international scientific/medical society of clinical laboratory professionals, physicians, research scientists and other individuals involved with clinical chemistry and other clinical laboratory science-related disciplines.
AACC is an international scientific/medical society of clinical laboratory professionals, physicians, research scientists and other individuals involved with clinical chemistry and other clinical laboratory science-related disciplines. Founded in 1948, the society has 10,000 members and is headquartered in Washington, DC.
AACC is subdivided geographically into 22 local sections. It is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors, responsible for managing operations and resources, and by a House of Delegates, responsible for planning, proposing policy and indicating priorities. A staff of 50 manages the Association's Washington, DC office.
CLINICAL CHEMISTRY
Clinical chemistry is the use of chemical processes in a clinical setting to evaluate patient health. It is one of several specialties -- such as microbiology, pathology, molecular biology or hematology -- practiced in the clinical laboratory. Most AACC members direct the laboratories that analyze body fluid samples, such as blood or urine, or samples of DNA, to gain information to help physicians diagnose or monitor a patient's state of health or disease. Advances in laboratory procedures enable physicians to make earlier, more definitive diagnoses and to tailor therapy for patients.
With the availability of new processes, such as molecular biology, many AACC members are applying their knowledge in new areas including genetic testing, prenatal screening and other aspects of medical laboratory science.
