US demand to rise 6.1% annually through 2010
Demand for sterile medical packaging in the US is projected to rise 6.1 percent annually to $4.0 billion in 2010. Pharmaceutical and biological applications will lead growth as advances in biotechnology and related life sciences contribute new injectable and inhalation therapies for cancer, heart disorders and other major diseases. This trend will especially boost demand for functional containers, such as prefillable inhalers and prefillable syringes, which provide for more precise drug administration and enhanced infection prevention. The impact of new and existing biotechnology therapies, along with the widening use of parenteral nutrition in the treatment of critical care patients, will expand the total market for sterile pharmaceutical and biological packaging 7.6 percent annually to $2.4 billion in 2010.
