Particulate Processes in the Pharmaceutical Industry
June 26-30, 2005 - Montreal, Canada
Crowne Plaza Montr?al Centre Hotel
Chair Professor Todd Pugsley, Chemical Engineering, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada
Co-chair Dr. Conrad Winters, Director of Formulation Development, Merck & Co., USA
Approximately 80% of all pharmaceutical products are in the solid dosage form. Particulate processes therefore abound in the pharmaceutical industry. These include crystallization; high-shear granulation; fluidized bed drying, granulation, and coating; tablet compaction; fine powder transport, mixing, and blending. These and other particulate processes are used for the large-scale manufacture of tablets and capsules for public consumption. As such, their proper design and operation is critical for meeting the stringent guidelines set by the regulatory authorities. Furthermore, the introduction of peptide and protein-based drugs and high-potency drugs will mean that the particulate-based manufacturing processes will need to be better understood so that they can be properly controlled and scaled up.
This timely conference will bring together researchers from industry and academia with knowledge of existing and anticipated challenges and the expertise to meet these challenges. A combination of oral presentations, poster sessions, and workshops will demonstrate the existing expertise and establish future research needs.

Conference Format
Discussion and interaction among participants are an important part of ECI conferences. To promote this interaction, theThe conference format will consist of seven technical sessions each of which will include a combination of short oral presentations, followed by poster viewing, and then a general Q&A session. in the mornings and afternoons and poster sessions in the evenings. Oral presentations will also be given poster space so that discussion may be expanded beyond the time limitations of the oral presentations. This means that all authors making oral presentations will also need to prepare a poster. There will also be two separate poster sessions on Monday and Wednesday evenings. These will be poster-only sessions and will not include an oral presentation or general Q&A Poster sessions will be designed to incorporate the themes of the conference sessions.
