EFPIA (The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations) represents the research-based pharmaceutical industry operating in Europe.
Founded in 1978, its members comprise 29 national pharmaceutical industry associations and 44 leading pharmaceutical companies involved in the research, development and manufacturing of medicinal products in Europe for human use.
EFPIA's mission is to promote pharmaceutical research and development and the best conditions for companies to bring to market medicines that improve human health and the quality of life around the world.
To achieve this, EFPIA's goal is to foster a favourable environment in Europe which:
promotes European pharmaceutical industry competitiveness in a global environment,
nurtures and rewards pharmaceutical innovation to guarantee industry's continuous quest for better therapies;
enables the industry to meet the growing healthcare expectations of present and future generations.
EFPIA's main policy objectives are:
to improve European healthcare market environment - in Europe today and an enlarged Europe tomorrow;
to maintain high standards of intellectual property protection in Europe and worldwide;
to set up an efficient and high-quality system for the approval of medicines in Europe based on quality, safety and efficacy, which ensures that new medicines reach patients rapidly.
