Drug Delivery and Diffusion through Polymers
June 21, 2005 - London, England
Institute of Physics
Introduction
Modern techniques of drug delivery use polymers in a variety of forms, such as solid dispersions, powder compacts, coatings, thick films, and capsules. An understanding of various phenomena, especially the diffusion of small molecules (e.g. water) and the dissolution of polymers, is essential for the control and improvement of drug release processes.
Speakers at this one-day meeting will report the latest results in drug delivery through polymers and highlight advances in the broader topics of diffusion of small molecules and the dissolution of polymers in vitro and in vivo. The meeting will be of obvious interest to pharmacists but also to polymer scientists and chemical engineers.
ABSTRACTS SUBMISSION
Abstracts for both oral and poster presentations at this meeting are being accepted until 15 April 2005. There will be three invited lectures, and there are spaces on the programme for a limited number of contributed oral presentations. Authors are encouraged to consider poster presentations, as the posters will make a vital contribution to the meeting.
To be considered for an oral or poster presentation, an abstract up to 250 words in a Word document should be submitted to Dawn Stewart, Email: dawn.stewart@iop.org by 15 April 2005
Reports on research related to any aspect of the themes of the meeting will be welcomed. Topics of special interest include:
? Mechanisms of drug release and polymer dissolution or swelling
? Novel formulations or methods for drug delivery
? In-vitro and in-vivo trials of carriers for drug delivery and biological aspects
? Fundamental measurements of the diffusion of molecules (e.g. water or drugs) in polymer or biological matrices
? Mathematical modelling of drug release mechanisms, diffusion, and polymer dissolution
? Development of new or improved methods to study the transport of molecules in polymers
Invited lectures will be given by:
? Professor Duncan Craig (The University of East Anglia)
? Professor Jonathan Hadgraft (The School of Pharmacy, University of London)
? Dr Christian Leuner (Mundipharma Research GmbH & Co. KG)
